Lets say you have $50,000 to spend on a new truck or truck-based SUV. What would you buy?
I'll start things off with a 2015 Silverado Double Cab LTZ 4x4.
Black over Black leather with 18" wheels and some chrome side steps. Along with a few more options. Silverado over Sierra because I prefer the looks up until the Denali/High Country trim levels.
Center console because I'm not a fan of how benches look in trucks. Standard 8" MyLink screen and Bose stereo.
Oh yeah, and the 6.2L V8 and 8-speed automatic.
There's a few more things like the LTZ plus package and Bedliner + Cover.
My truck slivers in at $49,550 thanks to a $1,000 rebate.
Now Oppo, lets see what you'd get.

A RWD Z71 Reg. Cab 8ft box. a REAL truck.
Factory Spray in liner? Heck yes.
Tan seats, because black is boring. Vinyl floor because this is a truck.
Touchscreen because it looks better with rather than without.

I'm crazy enough I would order this Unicorn of a modern truck.

So 30k more for a truck that has slightly better shocks than a truck that isn't the most expensive trim level? What kind of crack are you on? The Tundra isn't even 50k.

What the fuck are you on? The Tundra TRD Pro is a $42k truck, the 2014 Raptor was a $45k truck. That's a $3k difference, and well worth it for a much more powerful, more capable truck.
Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
> CRider
11/23/2014 at 20:13 | 0 |
A fully loaded Tundra goes for less than 50k. A base Raptor, without the dealer mark-up goes for 45k. The dealer mark-up for the Raptor is still insane, and it comes with Ford reliability. Oh, and the Tundra actually finished the Baja 1000 stock class.
Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
> CRider
11/23/2014 at 20:21 | 0 |
Here is a 75k Raptor. It comes with 4 speakers. It has just as much credibility as the Tundra, i.e. Baja 1000. While the Tundra might not be quite as capable, it is much more affordable FULLY LOADED, and 99.9% of people would never notice the lack of capability. Toyota also has a lot better track record offroad for the last, 60 or so years, so I'm pretty sure they did their homework.
CRider
> Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
11/23/2014 at 20:32 | 0 |
There's no link there, but who cares? Of course you can load up a Raptor to more than it's base price. You also get a lot more for the money. The most expensive Supercab Raptor I could buil on Fords site is $57k, and that includes everything I could put on it from the factory. Also worth noting that the upgrade stereo in the Raptor is a 10 speaker, 700 watt Sony system. The Baja marketing stunt is meaningless, worthless. the hardware speaks for itself, the TRD is not comparable to the Raptor in capability. Even Toyota says the TRD Pro isn't comparable to the Raptor.

11/23/2014 at 21:41 | 0 |
That isn't even the TRD Pro. That is the top spec truck. Yes, I have priced them. For the price of a TRD Pro, you could buy it and upgrade the suspension past Raptor levels. AND possibly have money left over to buy the TRD Supercharger. It's been proven that isn't necessary. If it can handle Baja, it doesn't really need to prove anything else.
CRider
> Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
11/23/2014 at 21:50 | 0 |
The Raptor isn't the top trim F150 either. And the Baja 1000 has a class for bone stock VW Beetles, any truck can complete the course with ease. The whole course is public roads in Mexico. Let's see, TRD Pro costs $42k, Raptor costs $45k. That's $3k left over to buy about two bypass shocks, two coilover shocks, lower A arms, fiberglass fenders, mechanical locking rear diff, limited slip front diff and engine upgrades. Good luck with that.

11/23/2014 at 21:57 | 0 |
Your skipping over the whole actually finding one for 45k and the options you don't get. I'll take the Toyota through experience with Toyota's. They will, and have always taken a lot more shit than anything else. They are known for their capability and reliability. Ford didn't get the Found On Road Dead title for no reason. Sure, Ford has a couple of exceptions like the Ranger, and when they throw everything they've got, they can build world beaters like the Ford GT. The Raptor is not the Ford GT.
CRider
> Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
11/23/2014 at 22:04 | 0 |
The Raptor was made by the same team that designed the GT. The head of the Raptor project, Jamal Hameedi, was also head of SVT when the GT was being developed. And if that tired old joke is your best argument for the Tundra, well, you aren't worth any more of my time. You clearly have your head so far up Toyota's ass that you can't see the light of day.
Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies

11/23/2014 at 22:17 | 0 |
Not up Toyota's ass, I just buy Ford's improvement in quality only slightly more than GM's. Lincoln symbolizes Ford. "But Ecoboost" is their claim to fame now, that is what they have. Chrysler's quality has improved, because how the hell could you get worse. Toyota cars have went to shit in the past few years, they are outdated as fuck, and wouldn't buy one if someone paid for half. But Toyota trucks and SUV's have been proven world wide. And judging by your article you've written on the Raptor, you fanboy it just as much. Quality control is my argument against the Raptor. Ford was the first to have the C.O. Jones to actually release something like it. Ram didn't push hard enough with their arguably better Ram Runner. GM had someone else build the ugly as shit Lingenfelter thing. Toyota is the first to actually try to compete, and I think these will hold out better.

So I like the Raptor because it's so much more than anything that has come before (Power Wagon being the exception, although that's a different game altogether). That doesn't make ma a fanboy. So I wrote an article about the Raptor, which I never intended to reach Jalopnik, in response to one or two people on Oppo and to expose some myths about the truck. I don't think Lincoln symbolizes Ford, though I agree that Ecoboost does. I agree that Toyota Quality is all but history these days, although they have shown signs of life the cars are outdated and sometimes downright uncompetitive. If Toyota's quality is lagging, Ford's is surging ahead. Mechanically, Fords are some of the most reliable vehicles. They lag in some surveys because MFT sucks. I commend Toyota on actually building the Pro trucks, but I maintain that for the price, the Raptor is a better deal for the money, and has better upgrades that Toyota can't match for the price.
